The village is most famous for the Milatos Cave — a large natural cavern in the hills above the village with a deeply tragic historical significance: in 1823, during the Greek War of Independence, approximately 3,000 Cretan civilians took refuge in the cave from the Ottoman army of Ibrahim Pasha, and were besieged there for weeks before being captured, massacred or sold into slavery. The cave contains a memorial chapel to the victims.
