At JamTransfer.com, we understand the Italian Riviera's unique charm and luxury:
Genoa City: Italy's largest port (7km from airport, 15-20 minutes) is a working city with authentic character. The historic center features Europe's largest medieval quarter with narrow caruggi (alleys), stunning palaces along Via Garibaldi (UNESCO site), excellent Aquarium (Europe's largest), birthplace of Christopher Columbus and pesto sauce. Less touristy than Florence or Venice but architecturally rich. Worth 1-2 days before heading to Riviera resorts.
Portofino - The Pearl of the Riviera: This tiny exclusive village (35km, 45 minutes) is one of Europe's most glamorous destinations. The picturesque harbor is lined with pastel buildings, luxury yachts, and celebrities. Designer boutiques (Gucci, Hermès), upscale restaurants, and stunning hilltop walks to Castello Brown. Extremely expensive but iconic. Very limited parking - most visitors arrive by boat from Santa Margherita or walk the coastal path. Peak season is incredibly crowded but magical.
Santa Margherita Ligure & Rapallo: These elegant resort towns (30km, 35-40 minutes) offer Italian Riviera charm without Portofino's prices or crowds. Santa Margherita features a beautiful palm-lined waterfront, excellent restaurants, boutiques, and easy boat/bus connections to Portofino. Rapallo is larger with a medieval castle, cable car to Montallegro sanctuary, and good beaches. Both are perfect bases for exploring the coast with better value than Portofino.
Cinque Terre Access: The five colorful cliffside villages (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore) are 80-100km south. Access is via La Spezia (1 hour drive), then local trains connect villages. The villages are car-free - parking is in La Spezia or Levanto. Alternatively, take train from Genoa to La Spezia (1.5 hours) then local train. Cinque Terre is stunning but extremely crowded June-September. April-May and September-October are better. Private transfers can take you to La Spezia for train connections.
Ligurian Cuisine: Liguria is famous for pesto (originated in Genoa), focaccia bread, farinata (chickpea flatbread), trofie pasta with pesto, fresh seafood, and local white wines (Vermentino, Pigato). The region's olive oil is excellent. Every coastal town has excellent seafood restaurants - ask locals for recommendations beyond tourist traps.
Peak Season: July-August are very busy and expensive, especially Portofino and Cinque Terre. June and September offer excellent weather with fewer crowds and 30-40% lower prices - highly recommended. May and October have pleasant weather but some seasonal restaurants close. Winter (November-March) is mild but quiet with many hotels closed. The Riviera maintains year-round appeal with locals but tourism is seasonal.
