At JamTransfer.com, we understand the unique character of Sicily and eastern Sicily's attractions:
Mount Etna Dominates: Europe's highest active volcano (3,329m) dominates eastern Sicily's landscape and climate. Etna erupts frequently, though usually not dangerously. The volcano offers year-round attractions: winter skiing, summer hiking, crater tours, wine tasting in volcanic soil vineyards, and spectacular views. The fertile volcanic soil produces exceptional wines, pistachios, honey, and produce.
Taormina - The Pearl of Sicily: Perched 200m above the sea with breathtaking views of Etna and the coast, Taormina (50km north, 50-60 minutes) is Sicily's most glamorous resort. The ancient Greek theater hosts summer performances with Etna as backdrop. The medieval town features luxury hotels, designer boutiques, excellent restaurants, and the beautiful Isola Bella beach below. Very popular but expensive and crowded in summer.
Syracuse (Siracusa): Once the most powerful Greek city in the Mediterranean, Syracuse (60km south, 60 minutes) offers extraordinary archaeology. The island of Ortygia is the baroque historic center with beautiful piazzas, cathedrals, and waterfront promenades. The Archaeological Park includes a massive Greek theater still used for performances, Roman amphitheater, and the Ear of Dionysius cave. Less touristy than Taormina with authentic character.
Catania City: Sicily's second-largest city (5km from airport, 15 minutes) is vibrant, gritty, and authentic. The entire historic center is built from black lava stone, creating unique architecture. Highlights include the bustling fish market (La Pescheria), baroque Piazza del Duomo, Via Etnea shopping street, and excellent street food scene (arancini, horsemeat). More affordable than Taormina with real Sicilian character.
Baroque Towns: Southeast Sicily (Val di Noto) features stunning UNESCO-listed baroque towns rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake: Noto (90km, beautiful honey-colored baroque architecture), Ragusa Ibla (100km, two-tier hilltop town), and Modica (110km, famous for chocolate). These towns are architectural masterpieces and worth day trips.
Peak Season and Climate: July-August are extremely hot (35-40°C) and very crowded, especially Taormina. June and September offer excellent weather with fewer tourists and are ideal times. Easter is busy with religious celebrations. Spring (April-May) is beautiful with wildflowers. Winter is mild (10-15°C) but many attractions have reduced hours. Etna's higher elevations can have snow November-March.
