🌍 About Knossos

Knossos is the most significant Bronze Age archaeological site in the Aegean, located just 8 kilometres south of Heraklion Airport, making it one of the closest major historical destinations to any airport in Greece. The transfer takes approximately 11 minutes via the main southern road through the Heraklion suburbs, passing through the municipality of Knossos before arriving at the fenced archaeological park. The site sits on a low hill surrounded by olive trees and vineyards, with the excavated palace complex visible from the approach road.

The Palace of Knossos was the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilisation, Europe's first advanced civilisation, which flourished from approximately 2000 to 1450 BCE. The palace in its final form covered approximately 22,000 square metres and is believed to have housed up to 100,000 people in its surrounding city. British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans excavated and controversially reconstructed large portions of the palace in the early twentieth century using reinforced concrete and vivid fresco reproductions — a decision that remains debated among archaeologists but makes the site extraordinarily vivid and accessible to visitors.

A visit to Knossos typically takes between two and three hours, and the site is open year-round, though summer midday heat can be intense — morning visits are highly recommended. The famous frescoes of the dolphins, the bull-leapers and the Procession Fresco have become iconic images of Minoan art, with the originals held in Heraklion's Archaeological Museum. The site includes the Grand Staircase, the royal apartments, the throne room and the ancient drainage systems that demonstrate the remarkable sophistication of Minoan engineering. A private transfer from Heraklion Airport to Knossos allows visitors to arrive directly at the site at any hour.

🚌 Other Transport Options

If a private transfer does not suit your plans, here are the main alternatives for travelling between Heraklion Airport and Knossos:

  • City Bus Line 2 (direct to Knossos) — Heraklion ASTIKO Bus Line 2 is the most convenient public transport option for reaching Knossos from the airport. The bus connects the airport to Heraklion city centre with stops near the Knossos road. From the city centre (Evans Street bus stop), a dedicated Knossos service (also Line 2) runs frequently, taking about 20 minutes. The combined journey from airport to Knossos by bus takes approximately 40–50 minutes with the connection. Total fare is approximately €2.40 (two journeys at €1.20 each). Approximate cost: €2.40 combined journey.
  • Taxi from City Centre — A taxi from Heraklion city centre to Knossos costs approximately €8–12 on the meter for the short 5km journey. If taken directly from the airport, the fare to Knossos is approximately €12–18, including the short detour southward. Taxis from the airport rank are available 24 hours. Given the very short distance, a taxi from the airport directly to the archaeological site is the most time-efficient option and competitively priced. Approximate cost: €12–18 from airport.
  • Organised Day Tour — Numerous tour operators based in Heraklion offer half-day guided tours of Knossos combined with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, typically departing from the city centre hotels. Tours cost approximately €25–45 per person including the site entrance fee (€15 adults). Many operators offer airport pick-up options for arriving visitors who wish to visit Knossos before checking into their hotel. This is an efficient way to combine airport arrival with a meaningful first cultural experience. Approximate cost: €25–45 per person.
  • Car Rental — Renting a car at Heraklion Airport specifically for a Knossos visit is only practical if combined with wider travel plans across Crete. The 8km drive from the airport to Knossos is straightforward and takes under 15 minutes. Paid parking is available immediately outside the archaeological site entrance. If you plan to continue from Knossos to other Cretan destinations such as Phaestos, Matala or the Messara Plain, a rental car makes an excellent combination. Approximate cost: from €25/day.
