Perissa is Santorini's liveliest beach resort, a long stretch of jet-black volcanic sand on the island's southeastern coast backed by the sheer volcanic cliffs of Mesa Vouno mountain. The beach runs for several kilometres and is among the longest on the island, well organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and water sports facilities. The resort has a young, energetic atmosphere and is particularly popular with backpackers and younger visitors who appreciate the concentration of affordable accommodation, lively bars and good-value tavernas along the beachfront promenade.
Perissa sits at the foot of Mesa Vouno, the dramatic volcanic mountain whose summit carries the ruins of Ancient Thira. The ancient site is reachable from Perissa by a challenging 45-minute hike up the mountain path or by road from Kamari on the other side. The beach at Perissa connects southward to Perivolos and then to Vlychada, forming one of the longest continuous black sand coastlines in the Cyclades. The Museum of Minerals and Fossils in Perissa village is an interesting small collection offering geological context for the island's extraordinary volcanic landscape. Perissa provides excellent value for money compared to the caldera villages and is a popular base for budget-conscious visitors who still want access to Santorini's dramatic scenery.
Black Sand Heat: Like Kamari, Perissa's black volcanic sand becomes extremely hot in direct midsummer sun. Water shoes are recommended for comfortable beach use, and sunbeds are available for hire throughout the beach to keep feet off the hot sand.
Ancient Thira Access: Ancient Thira on Mesa Vouno above Perissa is reachable by a steep 45-minute hike from the Perissa beach end. The site can also be reached by a paved road from Kamari — most visitors combine a Perissa beach day with an Ancient Thira visit by road. The two beaches (Perissa and Kamari) are separated by Mesa Vouno but connected by the mountain road around the summit.
Kamari Access: Kamari beach is on the other side of Mesa Vouno from Perissa — they cannot be reached directly on foot without climbing over the mountain. By road, the journey between Perissa and Kamari takes approximately 20–25 minutes. Water taxis may operate between the two beaches in peak season.
