Costa Smeralda - Italian Riviera Glamour: The legendary Costa Smeralda (30km, 30-40 minutes) is Italy's most exclusive resort area, created by the Aga Khan in the 1960s. Porto Cervo is the heart with designer boutiques, luxury yachts, celebrity spotting, and upscale beach clubs. Porto Rotondo (15km) offers a more relaxed alternative. The area features stunning beaches, crystalline emerald waters, and Mediterranean vegetation.
Best Beaches: Sardinia's northern coast has exceptional beaches: Spiaggia del Principe, Liscia Ruja, Capriccioli, Romazzino near Porto Cervo. San Teodoro area (25km south) offers La Cinta, Cala Brandinchi. Golfo Aranci (20km northeast) has several beautiful coves. Most beaches have stabilimenti (beach clubs) with service or free areas.
La Maddalena Archipelago: Accessible from Palau (40km, ferry 15 minutes), this stunning national park includes seven main islands with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and protected nature. Spiaggia Rosa (pink beach) is famous. The islands are perfect for boat tours and sailing.
Peak Season: July-August are extremely busy and expensive, especially around Porto Cervo. June and September offer better value with excellent weather. The mistral wind can be strong. Winter (November-March) sees most facilities closed.
